Assignment 3

Due: By class time Thursday, November 29.

Problem 4

Using the function and SynthDef's developed for the previous problems, create a short "bell study" based on Jonathan Harvey's piece "Motuos Plango, Vivos Voco". Your study should be at least 30" in duration but not longer than 1'. Try to extract as many compositional parameters as possible from the analysis of Harvey's piece done for listening assignment 2. For instance, you could focus on the role of the bells, the harmonic design of the piece (based on the bell's inharmonic partials), the use of amplitude envelopes and articulations, etc. You could even focus on a particular section of "Mortuos..." which you might find appealing and create some variations of it. The only restriction you have (besides 30" minimum duration) is that your code should generate the score for the piece using Ctk (no score editing), and it should be clear how are you using Ctk for this purpose (you must document your code, and be explicit about your work strategy).

Deliverables

  • Turn in a file with your SC code (the calls to the Ctk functions that generate the study), and any extra code we might need to generate your piece (SynthDef's, functions, etc.)
  • Document your code as much as possible. We should be able to understand how does your code work by reading your comments.
  • At the top of your file write a brief introduction explaining your work. Be as specific as possible.
  • Do not turn soundfiles in!.
  • Have fun!
