STUDENT ROLES
Each student will have a unique role in the production, directly analogous
to a real-world job on a professional film crew.
Examples of such roles include,
but are not limited to: Editor, Property Manager, Production Manager, Costume
Designer, Gaffer, Script Supervisor, Continuity Person, Assistant Director,
Assistant Camera Persons, Camera Operator, Assistant Art Director, Production
Designer, Hair/Makeup Designer, Storyboard Artist, Publicity Officer, Production
Accountant, sound designer, sound recordist, visual effects supervisor, compositor,
and Key Grip.
For explanations of the possible responsibilities accompanying each of these roles, please continue to
the supplemental materials.
Each of these roles falls into one of three larger deptartments:
the Production Department, the Art Department, and the Camera/Grip/Electric
Department. As Director, Art Director, and Director of Photography, the instructor
and the two TAs will head these departments.
Prospective students should apply with a particular role in mind,
but roles will not be assigned immediately upon admission. The specific
roles will be tailored to the gifts and interests of the specific
group of students. Some roles mentioned above may be duplicated,
telescoped, or foregone.
ROLE ROTATION
In addition to these specific roles, each student will
be given the opportunity to rotate through several other crew positions throughout
the course. Every effort will be made to give each student the broadest
possible experience of the filmmkaing process, while at the same time allowing
students to invest heavily in the areas of their gifting. For example, while the
costume designer will manage the design of the costumes, during produciton
he/she may act as a grip, a camera operator, or an assistant director, while
the editor manages costumes!
Finally, all students will be trained in the basics of nonlinear editing,
lighting, camera operation, set construction, and film production organization.
