WEEK 1
T 4.1
- Introduction to class themes and syllabus, administrative orientation.
- Homework: Students to bring in a 2-minute clip from a favorite film.
Th 4.3
- Students present a 2-minute clip from a favorite film (DVD/VHS).
Theoretical, conceptual and technical analysis of film clip by students, instructor and TA.
Discuss: Master Sequence, Dramatic Arc, Films within Films, Graphical Match, Action Match,
Time Compression and Dilation, Foreshadowing, Meta-narrative, etc.
- Homework: 1st assigned reading. Students begin ideation for Assignment 1.
- Assignment 1, Light & Shadow - create a 90 second, in-camera edited, silent B/W experimental study of "light and shadow." Must feature an experimental optical in-camera effect such as camera obscura, heat distortion, split-screen using mirrors, glass mattes, etc.
14 day project completion cycle.

- Includes; electronic image gathering, field production techniques, focus, exposure/gain, shutter speed, lenses, time-code, collor correction onboard enhancement and fxs.

- Screening and discussion of early and contemporary experimental film; Muybridge, Moholy Nagy, Duchamp, Melies, Maddin.

- Digital Video Editing Workshop 1. Mac OSX environment, basic work flow, system settings,DV casette log and capture procedures. Burn to disc

- Students present and critique Assignment 1.
WEEK 4
T 4.22
- Students continue to present and critique Assignment 1.
Th 4.24
- Digital Video Editing Workshop 2. capturing video from alternative sources, analog VHS, DVDs etc. Basic timeline navigation, move, split, copy, paste, speed. Basic motion, scale, opacity, crop. Basic effectss pallette: Color correction, image control.
- Homework: Concept write-up for Assignment 2, to be shared with class next week.
WEEK 5
T 4.29
- Students view and discuss examples of "found footage", appropriation, montage: Paul Pfeiffer, Cory Arcangel, etc.
Th 5.1
- Digital Video Workshop 3. Intermedite motion, keyframing, mattes. Introduction to DVD authoring. Introduction to Photoshop in the video domain. Image compositing in FCP.
WEEK 6
T 5.6
- Students present and critique Assignment 2.
Th 5.8
- Introduction of Final/Assignment 3: Fairy Tale. Using the Fairy Tale as a model for narrative, graphical, and psycological devices, small groups will author or adapt a short film. Groups will collaborate on key production elements: ideation, authoring, storyboarding, cinematography, and editing.
- Screening of examples for Assignment 3: The Brothers Quay, Joseph Beuys, Matthew Barney (& Tivon Rice if we have time)
- Homework: Reading #2 Funes, the Memorious By Jorge Luis Borges
WEEk 7
T 5.13
- Introduction of Final/Assignment 3:Personal Mythologies. Using Mythology as a model for narrative, graphical, and psycological devices, students will author or adapt a short film. Throughout the remainder of the quarter, students will present progress of key production elements: ideation, authoring, storyboarding, cinematography, and editing.

- Digital Audio 1. Demo of Sennheiser mic kits with PDX-10s, Voiceover, audio import in FCP
- Homework: Students will email an outline of their final project: Concept write-up, visual strategy, format, etc.
WEEK 8
T 5.20

- Audio Workshop 2. Intro to Soundtrack Pro
- Intro to DVD authoring
Th 5.29
- Pre-critique of final assignment. Students present quick 5 minute sketches of work in progress: images, short clips, storyboards etc. Classmates will share initial impressions/feedback.
WEEK 10
T 6.3
- Lab time to work on final project. Tivon will be in Rm105 for one-on-one assistance.
Th 6.5
- Final Project due: Students present and critique Assignment 3 (Final).
