DXARTS 442 - 3 Space 2: Computer Motion and Advanced Techniques

Stereo Projector Information

In Maya

Set up 2 cameras side by side (left and right) that output images that are 90% similar. Do not make the cameras so far apart that the difference between them is greater than 10%. Refer to the readings in course reserves on stereo photography for more information on this. Render both cameras (left and right) to tiffs.

In render settings, set frame size to upper limit 800 * 600 to match the projector. Anything less would have to be 4:3 aspect ratio and scaled accordingly. Set the other render options as below, with the exception of your start and end frame#'s. These should be set appropriately for the length of your animation.

In After Effects

Choose File > New Project.

Then Composition > New Composition.

Set it to have size 1600 * 600 (to match 2 800*600 movies side by side - you should uncheck "lock aspect ratio") Make sure you check SQUARE PIXELS and match your frame rate here with your frame rate from your Maya render settings. Set the Duration time to be the same as the length of your animation. The format for time in this window is Hours:Minutes:Seconds:Frames. IE: If your animation is set at 30 frames a second and 1575 total frames, that would be 1575/30 = 52.5 seconds or 52 seconds and 15 frames. For this example you would type 0:00:52:15.

Import your two movies in File>Import.

Brows to where your rendered images are and select the 1st image of your animation sequence. Make sure that the TIF Sequence option is selected. This will automatically convert your image sequence into a movie file inside AfterEffects.

Repeat this process for your second camera's image sequence, so that you have two movies in your AfterEffects asset windows. One is your left eye image and the other is your right eye image.

Drag them to your composition from the asset window, placing your right eye image on the right side and left eye image on the left side of the composition. The drag boundary box will auto-snap to the edges of your composition.

Export your composite movie as an AVI that can be read by the DepthQ player by using the following settings.

When prompted to name and save your composite, make sure to give it a unique name that indicates that it is a stereo animation and save it to your Documents folder. This will allow you to easily open it through the network on the PC.

Save your AfterEffects project so you can re-use it later.

Now you are ready to load your animation onto the PC...
