Jan 28 - Great Works Due
Class to be held in Raitt 205
Each student will do a report on a great work of art that has substantially influenced his/her practice. This report should take the form of a pdf document, and must be turned in to Noel & Tivon by 12:00noon on January 28th.
Here are some guidelines:
• The work must be pre-1980
• The work must be indisputably great
• The work must be announced in class on Jan 14, 2 weeks in advance of the due date
• Your pdf should be headed by a concise statement summarizing the work's essential core of meaning and the vector of its influence on you.
• Your pdf should provide a concise historical, theoretical, and aesthetic context for the work. This does not mean a regurgitated art history analysis of the work, but rather you as an artist providing an appreciation of the full gestalt of the work (What time of day was it presented and where? Who were the artist's influences? Why were particular materials used?)
• Your pdf should clearly indicate the themes in the work that inform your own practice
• Your pdf should investigate the "hows" involved with the work (How was it made? How is it structured? How does it work?)
• You pdf may contain images as appropriate
• You will present your great work, summarizing your pdf, during class on Jan 28, your presentation must not run over 4 minutes
