DXARTS 202: FUNDAMENTALS OF DIGITAL AND EXPERIMENTAL ART

WEEK 1 - Are You an Artist?

March 30 - Art and Artist

  • Course Introduction
  • In-class Assignment (1): Introduce yourself without introductory remarks
  • "Are You an Artist?" Discussion - Reference: Letters to a young poet by Rainer Maria Rilke
  • Assignment (2): Find an artwork or artist (due 4/1)
  • Assignment (3): Find a reference that represents our current times and culture. It could be an artwork, image, video, sound, material, object or anything else. (due 4/1)

April 1 - Simplicity, Complexity and Diversity

  • Annabel Castro's Works Presentation
  • Various Artists and Their Lives - Reference: Louis Bourgeois, Kazuo Ohno, Marcel Proust, Chris Cunningham, Nam Jun Paik
  • Brief Introduction to "Complexity in Simplicity" - Reference: The Laws of Simplicity #5 and #10, Olafur Eliasson, Green Cloud by Nuage Vert, Donald Judd

  • Assignment (4): Find an artwork showing Complexity in Simplicity or the other way around (due 4/6)
  • Assignment (5): Make a small project showing Complexity in Simplicity or the other way around (due 4/13)

  • Assignment (7): Describe your motivation for making art in less than five sentences. (due 4/8)
  • Assignment (8): Research about your favorite artwork including its historical/cultural background and production methods/processes (due 4/15)

  • Assignment (9): Describe your experience at the workshop and inspirations in a short paragraph. (due 4/13)

WEEK 3 - Motivation, Inspiration and Ideation

  • Ideation Process
  • Assignment (10): At this point you should have some references about your interest accumulated on your webpage. Categorize them in groups. Name each category and put it in a hierarchy. (due 4/15)

April 15

  • "My Favorite Art" Presentation and Discussion

  • Assignment (11): Write a short description of your final project idea(s). (due 4/20)

WEEK 4 - Proposal and Planning

April 20 - Media Art Methodology I: Data Visualization

  • Information Visualization and Computaional Drawing
  • Digital Technologies for Artists (1): Processing, VVVV, Max/MSP, PD, SuperCollider etc.

April 22 - Media Art Methodology II: Perception and Experience

  • Perception and Experince Art Work Examples
  • In-Progress Presentation and Feedback [ 2 students each 15min.]: Krishanu, Andrew
  • Lab Session (2:40-3:20): Toolkit Practice, Individual Talk about Final Project Ideas
  • Assignment (12): Make a list of tookits and/or materials for your project. Test one of them and present its result. (due 4/27)

  • Assignment (13): Find a site for your project and present its picture and installation plan (due 5/4)

WEEK 6 - Production

May 4 - Media Art Methodology IV: Body and Wearable Art

  • Body and Wearable Art
  • Assignment (14): Upload your proof of concept (picture, video of small portion of your work or test results directly relevant to your final project) (due 5/6)

May 6

  • In-Progress Presentation and Feedback [ 4 students each 15min.]: Hannah, Gaelen, Ashley, Jonathan
  • Lab Session ( 2:40-3:20)
  • Assignment (15): From this point, you receive individual assignments from me for your final project progress. Make sure to document all on your blog.
